Definitely made me aware of my cell phone usage, and I put a stop to it. The only thing I'm not liking is the harsh braking interpretation - which it registers whenever sudden Gs are applied to the phone. I used to keep the phone laying on the dash or by the shifter - but not anymore. The phone occasionally slid and then abruptly stopped - sudden Gs = harsh braking. Also poorly maintained streets and gutters - hitting either = harsh braking. All I can do there is try to avoid.

Used this app for a few months and it kills your battery life. You can't use battery saving mode with it so my phone lost charge significantly even when I wasn't using it. Deleted it and now my battery is normal again. Also the projected discount it shows for me changes constantly with no apparent correlation to my driving score. I wish it would show all of its scoring metrics in the app because most of my drives were perfect according to the app, but it would not score above an 80.

For the most part, the app is great. However, on occasion, it records phone use that takes place prior to driving as taking[address] which then counts against your driving score. This has happened to me many times, both with my car running but parked and sitting in my car, parked, with it not running. I never had this issue with the State Farm app, and USAA customer service isn't very helpful with the issue. So keep an eye on your app readings!

This system incorrectly claims I am using a hands free device when I am not.

Everything about this app has changed. Before I would get between 27-30% every renewal period. Now, it won't go above 20. Nothing has changed. I drive the same route every day. Same or less incident and still, won't go above 20. Then we get penalties for avoiding a crash by slowing down. It's still way to sensitive. I honestly think they are getting greedy now and intentionally making it harder to save that money.

I have been using this app just fine but all of a sudden today I started having issue with it. It kept saying I had to enable the location feature to be used. I hadn't changed the setting so I was confused why I was getting this message. I went and checked and my location was on. I still got the same message and couldn't get in the app. I deleted the app so I could reinstall it thinking that would fix the problem. Now I cannot re-download it because it is saying my phone is not compatible.🤷🏽‍♀

I think the idea for this app had good intentions to have people stay off of their phone while driving to be safer. My biggest 2 issues having only use the app for a month, would be that it drains my phone battery like crazy, and getting dinged for hands-free calling. I personally don't see a difference of talking to someone in your passenger seat VS talking to someone on the phone while driving. Other than that, the app helps drivers with staying off their phones and gets you a discount.
USAA SafePilot - Product Description
Participation in this program is currently limited to USAA members with an active auto insurance policy in select states.

The USAA SafePilot App instructs, inspires and rewards safe driving habits to help keep you safe on the road while lowering your auto insurance premium.

Eligible members can receive a discount of up to 10% for enrolling and participating in the program, and earn a premium discount at renewal time for being safe drivers.

When activated, the app monitors driving habits including phone handling, hands-free phone use, harsh braking, and how much you drive. The better you drive, the greater the discount on your next premium. All members of a household included on a USAA auto insurance policy can participate, with the earned discount based on an average of each driver’s individual score.
