Amtrak - Latest Quality Issues
Android

The app takes me to my booked trips and buffers, that is annoying when i want to book a trip. When i am looking to book a trip, the app will time out very quickly and say my search is no longer available. I have to press the ok button to clear the search before i can start over. The app makes me reset the number of passengers over and over. I wish there was a decent route map so i could see what trips will work. I often get a message saying there is no travel between those stations.

Codes
Requiring a code sent via email to access this application is inefficient. It is inconvenient to navigate between apps to retrieve a message or code, only to return to the original app and recall or record the code to facilitate login.

Let's pray.

Impossible
I've been riding Amtrak for many years. The app is adequate for simple transactions. However, I cannot get the app to open my guest rewards. It sends me in a circle back to the home page. I can't get the app to apply my perks such as companion tickets. I used to call the bot but now that takes too long. I just give up and wait yo buy tickets at train stations and lose the perks to time. I am a big supporter of public transport and Amtrak. It needs to keep going. But please make the guest rewards interface function. It may look nice but the navigation is not good. I did finally have a chat recently and was told my current companion ticket needed to be applied within 24 hours of departure. So I tried that. No good.

First off let me say that the Amtrack website is the worst site I have ever had the displeasure of trying to purchase a ticket through. It took me over an hour because as soon as I had finally finished completing the difficult payment form it would send me back to a empty form over and over for no apparent reason. When it finally after extreme amounts of frustration DID allow the ticket purchase it then required verification of the payment form from my credit card company. sales? why.

Unable to book ticket using rewards
I was unable to book my ticket using my rewards points. The option to pay using rewards and cash wasn't not available on the app.

No light at the end of the tunnel for this app
UPDATE:3-30-25 9 years later, the app still logs people out and forces them to retrieve a “code” in order to log-in. Still no ability to select a specific room or roomette through the app. Still no return of the Passport station stamp collector (2012 technology is way beyond the developers pay grade). So what, exactly, is new about the app? Well, they've made Guest Reward Point virtually worthless. Ex: 47,000 points for a 1-way bedroom from Chicago to Los Angeles. Cost per point: $1. Cost for just buying a ticket? $1,200. So by paying a nominal fee of $45,800, you, too can enjoy a “free” bedroom on Amtrak. With deals like those, why don't I just walk on my hands to LA instead? How do I know all this? You see, the app does allow you to purchase with points OR dollars now. Which is great progress, I guess? So thanks, Amtrak! As soon as I sell off a couple homes and take out a another mortgage, I should be able to afford your free Guest Rewards ticket again, just like in the old days before you destroyed the program! UPDATE: 7-16-2016 3 years later, Amtrak's app hasn't gotten much better; in fact, it has arguably gotten even worse. Some of the ongoing flaws: -No way to add tickets to Passbook once there's a change to reservation --"Trips" feature doesn't actually list your trip information if there's been a change to your reservation. -"My Reservations" updates slowly and unreliably, if at all. I currently have 3 trips planned, yet the single line "No Trips" is returned each and every time I check the status. -They finally provided a link to Amtrak Guest Rewards, and yet, you are still forced to log-in each and every time when you switch to AGR within the app. "Stay logged in" and "Remember me" features seem to either be beyond these developers' understanding or their capabilities. -And of course, the fact remains that their solution to fixing some minor glitches to one of the few really cool features of the App--the former passport check-in where you collected digital stamps from around the country by checking in at each station--was to spoil the fun for everybody by doing away with the feature entirely. By that logic, even though "Pokemon Go" is fun for many people, Nintendo should probably just delete the entire game since 3 or 4 people in Sarasota Springs experienced some technical snags. Don't get me wrong: I absolutely love Amtrak. But this app is an underachiever, has always been an underachiever, and from the looks of it, will always BE an underachiever. Satisfaction with mediocrity is an ugly sight to behold, even with something as beautiful as train travel. Previous review (3 stars—August 2013): I find it mind-boggling that, not only can't the app developers of a major entity like Amtrak solve whatever technical glitch befell the Passport feature, but that they then pose the following solution: abandon it completely! Are you kidding me? Somewhere, even the makers of Atari's "Pong" are laughing at this level of ineptitude! Look, guys--you have a decent app. You've finally let us link the app to our Guest Reward points. And we love Amtrak. But a lot of us LIKED the Passport feature. It was a cool way of keeping track of the stations we've visited, and for those of us who are heavy travelers and train foamers, collecting the stamp was akin to a kid collecting baseball cards. I never had a problem with the Passport functionality, but if some experienced glitches...well, all I can say is that even a buggy Passport feature is better than no Passport feature at all! Give it back and I'll change my rating to 5 stars--I've bought tickets from the app a number of times and love it for its convenience.
